Marton Interchange Upgrade Set for Completion in Middlesbrough

A major overhaul of a key Middlesbrough road junction is set to be completed later this week.

The large-scale programme of repairs and improvements to the A172/A174 Marton Interchange began in March, with motorists warned to expect significant disruption.

The scheme, led by Middlesbrough Council and main contractor Esh Construction, required a contraflow system on the A172 and occasional overnight closures.

Now the 54-year-old structure is set to re-open at the weekend having been given a new lease of life.

Upgrade works  include:

• Concrete repairs beneath the bridge

• Replacement of waterproofing and expansion joints

• Carriageway resurfacing

• New kerbs and footways

• Installation of a new pedestrian parapet and guardrails

The road – including the A174 slip roads - is due to be fully reopened in the early hours of Saturday (September 5).

Motorists are warned of some final disruption on Thursday and Friday nights while road markings are updated and traffic management is removed.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “These essential repairs and improvements are a key part of our ongoing bridges and structures maintenance programme. 

“Working closely with Esh Construction, we’ve worked hard to avoid lengthy disruptions and keep traffic flowing across the bridge throughout.

“We’re grateful the to the public for their patience and understanding throughout this important project.”
