One of Middlesbrough’s most popular public spaces has been given a fresh boost to improve safety.
Albert Park is a major attraction for visitors of all ages, and this weekend plays host to the internationally renowned Middlesbrough Mela.
The historic site has now benefited from a security boost with the installation of new CCTV cameras and columns at six locations around the park.
Existing cameras have also been upgraded as part of the revamp.
The move has been welcomed by Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke as part of his drive to make the town a thriving, healthy, safe and ambitious place.
The new cameras are directly linked to the town’s CCTV control room, while some feature the ground-breaking loud-speaker system which drew interest from around world when it was launched in the town centre.
Councillor Ian Blades, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Neighbourhoods, said:
Our historic parks draw people from across Middlesbrough and beyond, offering everything from world class events to a chance walk the dog and enjoy some fresh air.
“The safety and security of those using them is of paramount importance, and CCTV is a powerful tool in protecting law-abiding members of the community.
Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke added:
I know how strongly the public feel about safety in our parks and open spaces, and that’s why it’s one of my key priorities.
“Our CCTV network is rightly renowned for the role it plays in deterring and detecting crime and antisocial behaviour, and these new cameras are a welcome addition.
